Tutoring 101:
Guidelines and Expectations
How to take a class at One-Zero
This guide is designed to give you a clear idea of how tutoring works at One-Zero, outlining key expectations, essential guidelines, and your role in supporting student learning.
Here is a quick video walkthrough to show you how to run your tutoring sessions on Zoom — from joining the call to using key tools that support your teaching.
What a Typical Session looks like
Each week, you’ll meet the same student for a one-on-one, 1-hour online session. You’ll focus on teaching key concepts, solving examples together and helping them work through practice questions. Sessions are kept clear and focused, with a quick recap and notes at the end to keep track of their progress.
Tutor Guidelines
At One-Zero, we look for tutors who truly enjoy math — and want to share that passion with students. We value mentors who build real relationships, help students reach their goals, and create a space where learning feels safe and supportive. To make that possible, we ask all our tutors to follow a few simple but important guidelines:
Be on time, every time.
Join each session a few minutes early — students count on your punctuality.
Respect your schedule.
Commit to the weekly time slot you choose; consistency helps build trust.
Keep it clear and focused.
Plan your sessions, explain concepts simply, and keep the pace steady.
Guide — don’t give answers.
Don’t do the work for students. Instead, ask guiding questions, give hints, and help them build their own understanding and confidence.
Be respectful and professional.
Use polite, positive language. Be patient, stay calm, and listen actively.
Be a math friend and mentor.
Make students feel safe to ask questions, encourage effort over perfection, and support their long-term learning journey with kindness and care.
Check in mid-week.
A short message during the week is part of your role — it keeps students engaged, shows you care, and strengthens the learning relationship.
